G.E.A.R is the engine based instructional design methodology
behind Microsoft Official Distance Learning. Microsoft went back to the
drawing boards and said, "how can we improve instruction, increase
training retention and provide the best distance learning in a changing
evolving e-learning world.
How G.E.A.R Works
GATHER:
Student joins a Microsoft Official Distance Learning (MODL) session
in a Facilitated Virtual Classroom with Microsoft Certified Training
Instructors via e-learning tools like Microsoft LiveMeeting. The
instructor uses their knowledge and Instructor Slides with instructor
notes and the Microsoft Certified Trainer walks the student through a
topic. Each Microsoft Official Distance Learning (MODL) student will
have Official Microsoft Official Distance Learning (MODL) Student

Many attempts at Synchronous computer training and instruction
have failed. Most have suffered from a combination of poor design
and execution. It’s typically not been the tool, it’s been the
model. If this model was going to be different we were going to have
to create something that solves 2 MAJOR problems found in most
programs to date:
Taking
an existing computer training course, like a SQL Server or Visual
Studio.NET or Vista Server, and simply porting it on-line depending
too heavily on Synchronous as the dominant modality. This is
basically asking the technology to do more then it can, replace the
classroom OR act like the classroom. They don’t maximize one of the
BEST instructional elements this type of model has to offer and
that’s TIME!
Current programs don’t understand how to design learning for the
2 dimensional and visual nature of synchronous based instruction.
So Microsoft Official Distance Learning (MODL) takes advantage of
Dr. Clark’s and Gottfredson’s work and we incorporate all the
aspects of what distance learning brings to the table including
TIME, being on the job throughout, and the many tools, including
synchronous, MSL and the industry has built to date.
- Step 1 – VISUALIZATION – transfers knowledge to Working

- VIRTUAL CLASSROOM SLIDES

- Step 2 – INTERACTION – encodes Working memory to Long
Term memory
- VIRTUAL CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES
- QUESTION AND ANSWER
- Step 3 – KINESTHETIC – imprints Long Term memory and
improves recall through modeling and hands-on experience
- MODELING THROUGH DEMONSTRATIONS
- HANDS ON SCENARIO EXERCISES
- Step 4 – FEEDBACK & RECALL – closes the loop by
reinforcing cognitive encoding through instructor
feedback and recall assessment
