Launching Your Virtual Lab

Click on the name of the course to open it.

The course information is displayed, below it is a heading for Activities.

Each activity correlates to a Lesson in the textbook and in your On-Demand Training video content.

Click the name of an activity to open it.

You will see the technical information for the lab, including the maximum duration that it can be opened in a session.

Below this information, click “Launch”

A new window will open to show the progress of the lab as it is loading. Depending on the content of the lab and your network connection, this will take between 1-5 minutes.

Once the lab is loaded, you will see a Windows 10 lock screen or login screen.

Features within the Virtual Lab Environment

Sidebar:

To the right of the Windows 10 screen, there is a sidebar with 3 tabs

The Instructions Tab:

  • Displays step-by-step instructions for progressing through your lab
  • Complete each step and check the box in the instructions tab to track your progress

The Resources Tab:

  • Contains buttons to enter your username and password
  • Has options for simulating physical media on the virtual machine
    • You won’t likely need to use these and will be directed to do so if you do.

The Help Tab:

  • Theme Color allows you to change the color of the theme
    • Does not affect the Windows environment, just the container it is in (mainly the sidebar)
  • Machine Remote Controller changes the technology by which you connect to the lab
    • Please only change this if directed by support
  • Support Information contains the instance ID, which will be needed if you experience problems with your lab that require a support ticket to be opened.

Hamburger Menu:

  • Three horizontal, parallel lines in the upper right of the sidebar
    • End your lab (merely closing the window does not end a lab instance)
    • Split Windows separates the sidebar and virtual machine to 2 separate windows

Bolt and Display Menus:

In the upper left corner of your lab window, there are 2 buttons

The Bolt button contains common commands and functions that would be sent to your PC if used on a keyboard and other helpful tools

  • Ctrl+Alt+Delete: Sends an interrupt request to the virtual machine and opens the security options menu
  • Alt+Tab: Displays all open windows on the virtual machine and cycles through them
  • Windows Key: Allows for the use of hotkeys that use the windows logo key
  • Type Text: Enters Username, Password or text copied to clipboard at the location of the cursor
  • Power: Allows to Pause/Reboot/Power Off the virtual machine— only used in troubleshooting
  • Virtual keyboard: displays an onscreen keyboard within the virtual machine should you need it

The Display button looks like a computer monitor and allows you to control how the virtual machine is displayed

  • Full Screen: Toggles full screen mode
  • Fit Window to Machine: Resizes the window to fit the machine to allow for more desktop space on your PC
  • Reconnect: When resizing or moving windows, this should happen automatically. If your video is not displaying properly, this will force a reconnection that may resolve it.
